DIV 100% - How to set div layer to 100% of screen

If I resize the window, the layer's width should adjust accordingly to 100%. I tried setting div layer to 100% in CSS.

Code:

.header { width: 100% }

It doesn't make any difference. I also tried to set it to auto. No changes as well. Any ideas?

This looks like it should work.

Actually it doesn't. The width 100% seems to expand the div to the size of the screen. But it does not stretch it to the size of the page.
