Hi,

Ever thought about whether to mamy backlinks in a short amount of time can be suspicious?

Are the fluctuations in link building campaign recognised by search engines as unnatural site pupularity growth and could this be treated as suspicious? Sometimes we get really excited and start gaining links by every means possible, and when the business is already booming, and traffic is by the tonnes, we might not even try to obtain one single back link.. In my opinion link building should be steady and have linear growth. What are your thoughts?

Then, I am in trouble...

I have like crazy, tried to gain perhaps 100 links to one of my sites in the beginning. After that I did nothing. I better get on it...

I think it's very hard to build links so fast that Google will penalise you without doing Blackhat type linkspamming stuff (ie XRumer etc) which most here I presume would never use even if they were aware of it (myself included). Some sites launch with a bang and say TV advertising combined with linkbait etc (ie a clever online game) and can get a lot of natural links very quickly. Google's algorithm would not penalize that sort of thing, and it probably can't tell the difference easily from what you are doing.

In addition, Google does not discover all new links at the same time - so even if you do 1000 links now, it may take a month for Google to find them all, and Google could then think they have been spread out more than they have.

To break the system I think you would be looking at more than 1000 links in a day or so.... getting a couple hundred is not going to break anything.

THAT SAID - Links DO age (ie fresh links are better), plus Google does take into account trending topics and sites. If you build a lot of links initially you can get a very good ranking, but if it doesn't continue two things will happen. Firstly as the links get older they become less valuable (in MOST but not all cases - this is a side issue i won't bother discussing) so you will drop in rankings. Secondly Google may bump you up higher than normal quicker than normal as you may be considered a "trending topic". This isn't always good - as if you are in that category you can drop just as easy.

As an example of something similar to the above I've written press releases that have come from nowhere to #1 ranking for a phrase almost instantly, yet 2 months later they aren't even indexed by Google any more.

Overall building a lot of links isn't a problem, but you have to keep it up. If you build 1000 links a day for a week, and then drop to 0 new ones for 3 months you will drop like a stone - as an ex-trending topic/page. If however you build 1000 links a day for a week, then keep building say 20 links a day from then on, I think you could do very well. Doing a lot at once is good, but only if you can keep it up somewhat!

Hope this adds something!

Link velocity is one of the factors that we measure for both our own clients and their competitors. Its a fast and easy way of getting a good landscape of prior and continual link building campaigns.

Google not only measures the # of backlinks, but also your velocity. Huge spikes in your velocity are indications that your site may be trying to "game the system" and be placed in the sandbox.

you must have to be slow in gaining backlinks.Running for gaining quick backlinks can ban your site by google.
