Alexa Ranking - How Accurate?

Alexa most likely relies on the toolbar installed in the browsers to determine ranking of the sites. I am not sure of any other factors that contribute to better Alexa rank. One more perhaps could be if you have one of their widgets embedded on the webpages.

Based on this two methods to check the traffic, surely it's obvious to say that the ranking is not very objective. Who installs Alexa toolbar? Most likely webmasters.

Alexa made announcement some time last year, that they use now other factors to rank sites?

Any ideas what they are?

I personally think the only use for Alexia traffic rankings are for helping sell advertising to those who are silly enough to believe in them!

As you sugested, the webmaster related sites rank higher than other sites, probably even though they might have in reality less traffic.

I share the belief. You can not use that tool as any accurate ranking tool...

Alexa ranking is about the same as any other ranking companies, must have some validity to it if they are all about the same. No I would not guarantee it to be totally accurate but Google won't put out a listing because it would be against their company policy. Google Analytics does give you accurate results for how many visitors your website has had.

I think Google results about visitor is most accurate and i always prefer it

IMO the figures are a rough guide at best. The results are heavily reliant on only a very small percentage of overall users

For me, i don't give much attention with alexa. I concentrate with google page rank rather.

My sources attest that there are over 200 points in the algorithm, and page rank is but one of those.
